frequently-asked questions

can I bring a complaint to the ombudsman if I don't live in the UK?

Whether we can look into a complaint depends on where the financial business was based when the service or product was provided – not on where you are living now.

Broadly speaking, we look at complaints about services or products provided by a financial business in or from the UK, excluding the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

But some businesses outside the UK – like PayPal – have asked to be covered by our service. So if you’re unsure whether we can look into your complaint, it’s often best to call us.

If your problem is about a financial business based in another European country, you might be able to get help from an equivalent complaints-handling body. The European Financial Dispute Resolution Network (FIN-NET) website can help you find the right organisation to get in touch with.
