Sir Nicholas Montagu appointed as chairman

23 November 2011

The Financial Ombudsman Service today announces the appointment of Sir Nicholas Montagu KCB as the chairman of its non-executive board of directors. Sir Nicholas succeeds Sir Christopher Kelly KCB - who steps down as chairman in January 2012 after seven years.

Sir Nicholas is the former chairman of the Board of Inland Revenue, with over twenty years as a senior civil servant working on issues ranging from pensions to public service reform.

The appointment has been made by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 - with the approval of HM Treasury - and follows a recruitment exercise earlier in the year, including advertising in the press.

The board of the Financial Ombudsman Service has strategic responsibility for running the ombudsman service - ensuring the organisation is properly resourced and able to carry out its work effectively, impartially and independently.

Sir Nicholas said:

I am delighted to have been appointed chairman of the Financial Ombudsman Service. It is a strong and innovative organisation, which over the last ten years has been recognised for the increasingly significant role it plays. I look forward to working with Natalie Ceeney and her colleagues as we meet the challenge of providing an ever-improving service, with customer demand set to reach record levels.
