Walter Merricks, chief ombudsman, was last night awarded the "Achievement Award" at the 2004 British Insurance Awards, held at London's Albert Hall and attended by 2,000 people from the UK's insurance industry.
Water Merricks responded to the award, saying:
I feel privileged to receive this award, which I share with all the staff at the Financial Ombudsman Service whose expertise and professionalism make the organisation what it is. I take the award to be a recognition of the value the industry sees in the role of the ombudsman and the service we provide to policyholders.
One of my aims for the organisation is to support confidence in financial services by offering customers access to fair and independent dispute resolution when they think things have gone wrong. Inevitably, we come up with some decisions the industry does not like - and being popular has never been in the job description. Therefore, it is all the more gratifying to find myself a recipient of this prestigious award.
